Many of us ignore the difference between vintage and retro and use both of them to define oldies. Both of them have similarities, but there is a huge difference we should all know. So let’s discover the meaning of each word :
The Vintage
Vintage is used to describe items which were made in the 1920s or later (but not later than 20 years before the present year). It refers to the age of the item, more than its style. A lot of People make a mistake when talking about modern garments inspired by the 50s or 70s period. But in reality, when cannot call habits “vintage” unless they were created more than 20 years ago and on. For example, It can’t be vintage if it was made 15 years ago.. the term “vintage isn’t specific to clothing. It’ s also used to describe wine, jewellery, ornaments, houses, cars or whatever.
The Retro
In the opposite of vintage garments, retro ones don’t define the epoch during which they were made. Indeed, Retro refers to the style in which the items are created. Many designers try, from time to time, to bring back the retro style by creating outfits which were trendy in the past. Yet, this is a sort of refreshment of the vintage style. So, Retro is a recent imitation of vintage style. A sort of modern cloning of old fashion or vintage clothing or whatever.
Personally, I am in love with old style above all the 50 and 60 styles. I think that women were way more decent, chic and sophisticated. I am a big fan of dresses and skirts. They bring immediately an effortless touch of chic and feminism. I can easily wear them every single day.
